Golden Deli History

The year of 1981 was a special time for the city of San Gabriel, California. Though the community may not have yet known, the founders of Golden Deli were preparing to bring new life in the form of authentic Vietnamese fare to the small Los Angeles suburb.

The founders of the prestigious Golden Deli hailed from Vietnam. The couple arrived in Los Angeles in 1975 with all their love, hopes, and dreams in tow. The following year, they married at the historic Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, becoming the mission's first couple to wed in a traditional Vietnamese ceremony. Shortly thereafter, the founders poured all of their efforts into making their aspirations a reality...and Golden Deli was born.

What started as a Chinese fast food restaurant soon began offering Vietnamese dishes on weekends. Growing demand, however, indicated that Golden Deli's Vietnamese meals were quite the hit. The founders took note; within about two years, the menu expanded to solely feature traditional Vietnamese foods. Of the more than one hundred menu items available, standout items include Pho Dac Biet (pho special: rice noodle soup with ribeye, brisket, tendon, and tripe), Com Suon (pork chops with rice), and Cha Gio (egg rolls). These homestyle dishes were, and continue to be, fan favorites. Popular beverages to wash it all down include Soda Chanh (lemonade soda), 3 Mau (three-color bean), and Cafe Sua Da (iced coffee with condensed milk).

Over 40 years after its inception, hungry diners keep coming back for more. One visiting food critic proclaimed Golden Deli's Phan Chao Tom (shrimp paste with sugar cane) the "best thing he ever ate on a stick," while another called Golden Deli's Cha Gio the best in the "observable universe." But don't just take our word for it; come experience all that Golden Deli has to offer. There is something for everyone! We hope to see you soon.

The owners of Golden Deli are the first Vietnamese couple to wed at the storied San Gabriel Mission in 1976.
